"What?" Remus asked, evilly delighted even as he put on his best innocent face (which was about as useful as Sirius' innocent face), "No pun intended?"

Even after five years, not a single one of the Marauders had gotten tired of jokes regarding Sirius' name, much to his constant annoyance. Remus seemed to get away with it the most often out of all of them, because Sirius would never hit him, and they all knew it. Remus seemed to have absolutely no problem using this to his advantage, at least when it came to the 'no pun intended' joke.

Sirius' eyes narrowed, and Remus held in a snicker, completely unaffected. "Oh, right, because PMS-ing jokes are fine, but no pun intended jokes, now that's seriously off-limits." Hehe. Still funny. The snicker did not stay in for long. Sirius' face was too priceless.

Although, now that he thought about it, his life would be much duller without Sirius, in the sense that it would be quiet and just all around pleasanter. Still, Remus was much less likely to murder his friend now that he got a jab of his own in. And despite the jokes, Sirius seemed genuinely concerned about him. Which was nice of him, but unwarranted. Well, at least when it came to this. He was sure that soon enough he would probably start feeling worse for wear.

Huffing, Sirius muttered to himself under his breath, burying his face in his arms and proceeding to take his second morning nap as Professor Rictor began to drone. He sniffed his shirtsleeve as he drifted off, smelling Sev still on him and smiling to himself, his face hidden.

Twenty minutes later (he should start setting his watch to it, Rictor really was very punctual), the professor slapped his desk, just in front of his head, and Sirius jolted awake yet again. His head snapped up, and he tried sleepily, "Fehu?" It took him a minute to realize that he'd come up with the celtic rune for... cattle.

Rictor sighed. "Twenty points from Gryffindor, Mr. Black. And do make an effort to study the Mayan rules for the mid-term exam?"

Sirius' eyes widened almost comically. "There's a mid-term exam?! Where have I been?" he hissed audibly to Remus. "She never said anything about that before."

"Considering you spend ninety percent of my class asleep, Mr. Black, I believe I have indeed said quite a lot about it before. You have never been awake to hear it." Rictor picked up her copy of the book again, but Sirius was still stuck on the exam thing.

"I learn best while sleeping, Professor," he said innocently, and Rictor rolled her eyes, clearly running out of patience.

"Mr. Black, kindly be silent. We shall go over the inscription again..."

"It's in two weeks," Remus whispered under his breath to Sirius a moment after Rictor turned her attention off of his friend. "Thursday. I made a study guide for you." For all of them, actually. Because since it was a rare thing that any one of the Marauders paid any attention in this class, aside from Remus, none of them would know what the exam would be on. And so Remus made them study guides, and spent an absurd amount of time carefully explaining the finer points of every subject Peter had trouble with to him, because Sirius and James only rarely had the patience unless actual spells were involved. He did let them copy work sometimes, but cheating on exams was strictly off-limits. Which was why Remus kept track of these things for his friends.

Without looking up from his (extremely meticulous) notes, Remus pushed a packet over to Sirius. "Celtic runes were last unit." And thus would not be on the mid-term.

Because he didn't bother looking up, Remus also didn't notice that several rows back, Snape was not bothering to hide a smirk at what had just happened. About time someone told Sirius about the mid-term. Severus had known, of course, that Sirius had no idea about it; he'd watched him sleep through weeks of classes, after all. And he might actually have felt bad about not informing him in a few days, if someone hadn't gotten to it. On the other hand, probably not.

"Two weeks," Sirius mouthed, looking severely displeased. That was... very unfair. How could it be on two weeks? It was only... October... right. Mid of term. Term ended in December. Sigh.

Groaning under his breath, he let his forehead drop onto the desk with an audible clunk; Rictor looked down at him, but apparently she decided it wasn't worth the effort to try and deal with Sirius Black again, because she continued on with her translations.

Sirius just went back to sleep. Well, really, what would it help, him trying to stay awake and learn something today? He'd only end up sleeping anyway, and he sincerely doubted staying awake for the next half hour would help him at all on the mid-term exam.

By the time the dratted class was finally over, Sirius yawned and stretched... and felt suddenly restless. Not to mention frustrated... in more than one way. Sev was in trouble for not telling him about the exam. Trouble with a capital "T". He made sure he and Remus exited the classroom just behind Snape, and then made a point to bump into Sev's shoulder. Not as hard as he might have, a month ago, but hard enough to get the bloke's attention. Under cover of the mass of students now filtering into the hall (and Remus being occupied by rustling through his bag), he sent the other boy a wicked grin, raising a brow... and then disappeared into the crowd, headed for the broom closet that was marginally close to McGonagall's classroom.

Needless to say, being busy searching for whatever it was in his bag, Remus wouldn't notice that Sirius was no longer with him until he arrived at Transfiguration alone.

Not surprised by this, although of course he was lucky he hadn't been knocked over, or into someone (probably Avery, who would have been a prat about it for no reason), Severus watched as Sirius walked off, knowing where he was going. He wasn't surprised, no, but he was a bit suspicious that Sirius would be less than pleased that he hadn't informed him of the exam. Well, he'd have to live with it. Never once did he ask about an exam. So he'd never lied about it. And to be fair, he did assume Lupin (the only one of that lot who paid even the slightest bit of attention in any class) would eventually inform him. Or Potter or Pettigrew, who would then inform him.

It was most definitely not his job to inform Sirius of exams. At least not exams he should have known about, and would have, had he ever bothered to stay awake during class for more than two minutes. Perhaps failing an exam he hadn't known about would have gotten him to pay attention... no, Severus knew that was just a dream. Oh, well. It was Sirius' business if he wanted to sleep through classes. And it was Severus' if he chose not to tell him what he'd missed. Constantly.

He was no enabler. Nor was he a pushover. Well, at least in that regard. Turned out he was a bit of one, though, because he had the feeling he would be skipping Transfiguration just because of the way Sirius had looked at him. That was really all it took. But he didn't have to tell Sirius that. There was absolutely no need to inflate his head further.

Sirius showed up outside Transfiguration after McGonagall had dismissed the class, out of her field of vision, whistling to himself. He looked up when Remus and Peter emerged, putting an arm over each of their shoulders.

"Fantastic day, isn't it, mates?" he asked cheerfully. He waited for James, but he didn't show, even after Evans had emerged as well... clearly peering around and looking for Sev. Sirius had to stifle a grin... well, no, he really didn't.

"Lost your boyfriend, Evans?" Wicked smile.

She glared death at him. "I'm sure he's just ill, Severus never misses class."

"I do," Sirius countered cheerfully. "You should try it some time. Might make you a bit more fun to be around, you know, loosen you up..." So she could slide that stick out of her arse... Evans just glowered and stomped off, rubbing her prefect badge as she went, and Sirius was suddenly very glad that Remus didn't polish his.

Speaking of Remus... "Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked, blinking.

Feeling a bit like someone had punched him in the gut, Remus just continued to stare up at Sirius, silent and unblinking, for a long moment after he spoke. He had absolutely no idea what to say, and looked slightly pale, or paler than usual.

He'd gotten to class, found himself alone, and been only mildly surprised; Sirius did have a tendency to wander off sometimes, it wasn't unheard of. After all, James hadn't been to any of their classes that day, and no one was surprised. Peter finally showed up, and Remus was glad for that, not really preferring to spend class sitting alone.

But then... then he'd noticed that there was one other person missing from the class. Everyone else who'd been in the Ancient Runes classroom, earlier, when he'd caught that scent again, was there. Everyone but Sirius... and Snape. Snape, who had been there when he'd caught it the night before, too. Who Sirius had gone off to see, wanting to get James' cloak back.

And suddenly, what had been nagging at him all day, but he couldn't quite put his finger on until just then, hit him: the blankets Sirius had covered him in, the shirt he'd put back on from the day before... they had only had one other scent on them strong enough for it to have been from the night before. But Sirius had gone back to Snape's little closet. And then, by his own words, he’d gone to pass the time with someone. So there should have been two scents, Snape’s, and someone else’s.

But there was only one.

There was only one scent, and try as he might (and he did spend a good amount of time during Transfiguration attempting to smell the entire room without looking like a madman, which was only marginally successful), he couldn’t catch it in the class when Sirius and Snape weren’t there. And when he’d finally given up on that, mainly because Peter was starting to stare at him with something bordering on concerned bewilderment, he’d realized something: Severus Snape had blue eyes.

That was when he’d nearly fallen out of his chair. The rest of the class was spent in intense concentration on the paper in front of him, which was supposed to be his notes. He’d stopped taking notes mid-sentence, though, and ended up just… staring at it. Vaguely, he felt a bit bad for Peter, who seemed rather frightened by his behavior, but he didn’t bother attempting to explain. No… he couldn’t do that.

He’d had enough time, he thought, to come to terms with this, by the end of Transfiguration. Not enough time to get quite over the shock enough to form an opinion about it, or anything like that. But enough time that he assumed he would be able to face Sirius without coming across as a nutter.

Clearly, he was wrong. Sirius put his arm around him on one side, and Peter on the other, and it was all Remus could do not to fall over. He smelled like it again, much more than he had before. That did it. He was right. He was really right about this. All the logic fit, and beyond that… Remus just knew he was right about it. There was something that just… fit. A rightness to it. And yet, all the rightness in the world didn’t help Remus from feeling as though he was in a dream, and quite possibly about to faint.

Hence the staring. Gaping, really. If Peter hadn’t been there, at that moment, Remus would have told Sirius that he knew. He would have demanded an explanation, or… or something. Not that Sirius owed him one, but… but… Snape!? Sirius and Snape? The words were on the tip of his tongue, for a minute, as he stared at his friend.

But then… he glanced over at Peter, and slowly, Remus shut his mouth. No. Sirius was keeping this quiet for a reason. It was none of his business. And really… what did it matter? It didn’t. Remus knew, he could tell, that this… this whatever it was he had, with… with Snape… was important to his friend. He wouldn’t get in the way of that, couldn’t question it. It was weird, but… well, he would be the last person to judge, wouldn’t he?

“I…” Remus finally started, still more than a little pale-looking, “…I need to lie down.” And with that, he turned, wandering towards the Gryffindor Tower. Hopefully he would make it there without passing out from shock.

Left standing there with one arm still slung about Pete's shoulders and the other now hanging limp, Sirius stared after Remus, supremely confused. "I knew he was feeling sick," he said quietly, dropping his arm from Pete's shoulders and tensing. "I knew it. He's been weird all day."

It was only lunchtime, though; Remus would miss all of his afternoon classes. And Merlin knew where James was off at; Sirius was actually a bit curious. Still, though...

"Want to head to the library, work on the Animagus bit?" he asked after a pause. Peter nodded, looking after Remus and gnawing at his lip.

"We won't get it in just a few days, though," he said quietly. Sirius shook his head.

"No, but the sooner we do... the sooner we can help," he said firmly. Pete nodded, leading the way down the corridor towards the library. They spent the remainder of the day there, working hard.
