Remus allowed this to go on for a good ten minutes. For ten minutes, he ignored Sirius behaving like a three-year-old. He sat there, rereading the same paragraph four times before just moving on to the next and counting that one as a lost cause while Sirius got up and wandered around a bit, sat down, no, sat down improperly, and began drumming. Again.

It was when Sirius got to the second refrain of his little song that Remus finally lost it. Completely ignoring the fact that several people at nearby tables were staring at them, and understandably so, Remus slammed his book shut, barely leashing the urge to leap on his friend and possibly rip his throat out with his bare hands. Which he was pretty sure he couldn't do, but he would give it a good go.

"SIRIUS." Remus' voice was somewhere between stern Prefect-voice and nearly insane delirious-from-lack-of-sleep-and-feverish approaching-full-moon voice. Not good at all, because the look in his eyes was murderous. If he moved, he would attempt to kill Sirius. So Remus remained seated. Barely. But he couldn't help but growl at his friend. "I swear to God, if you don't behave I will take points and there will be no detentions involved!"

To the normal person, that wouldn't make any sense. But as they all knew, the Marauders were nothing approaching normal. Sirius and James were attempting not only to beat last year's record of most detentions earned, but to outdo one another at the same time. So detention giving, though suddenly a new weapon in Remus' arsenal, became almost like giving his friends a gift. Although, much to his friends' chagrin, Remus had a tendency to use his Prefect powers for the forces of good, rather than joining the dark side completely and giving them detentions when they pleaded.

But that meant that he could use not giving a detention as a weapon. And tonight, tonight he would.

Sirius looked up, horrified. "No detentions?!" he squeaked, barely audible. That much, he knew was bad. He wanted detentions. Needed them. He had to beat James this year, he couldn't possibly let Potter win, he had to show that he was the worst troublemaker in the history of the school, not his best mate.

So, very meekly, he nodded. "Yes, Moony," he said in a very small voice. He stood, turned his chair around correctly, and sat back down, forcing his hands and his feet to keep still.

It worked, for a few minutes. He just had to keep reminding himself that he needed Moony to give him detentions, too, not just James. But eventually he just couldn't sit still anymore; the sugar was rushing through his brain like wildfire. So he got up, meaning to put his books back, which he did... mostly correctly.

On his return trip, though, he got into trouble. The aisle between the tables, he noted, was just wide enough... for a cartwheel. Now, Sirius had never even attempted a cartwheel before in his life, but really, how hard could it be? Little girls did it all the time, right?

So, thus prepared, he thrust his hands up into the air, running out of the stacks and screaming like a banshee. "WHEEEEE MOONYYYYY CARTWHEEEEEEEEEEEEL--"

CRASH.

He'd actually only made it about halfway into his acrobatics when he'd gone off on a bit of an angle... and crashed right into an empty table, shattering the old oak. He lay in the wreckage, slightly upside-down and laughing uproarously, unable to quiet himself or stop his hilarity. "Cartwheel-ahahahahahahahahaha!"

From the rest of the (stunned) library, there was a moment of silence as everyone just... stared at Sirius. He was right in view of Madam Pince, three tables of Ravenclaws and a pair of young Hufflepuffs, Peter, and Remus, all of whom were staring at him in varying states of shock as he lay in the wreckage, cackling. After all, Sirius just tried to do a cartwheel while screaming unintelligibly, and took out an entire table. Shock was a good reaction.

After a moment, many of the students began to laugh; how could they help it? It was funny. It was hilarious, actually. He was lying in a pile of what used to be a table, laughing like a hatter. You just don’t see that every day.

Of course, for some people, the shock was a little more pronounced. Such as Madam Pince, who was turning red; clearly, if she hadn't been surrounded by people, the librarian would have cursed the Gryffindor into oblivion. Her appalled expression was matched by the mortified look on Remus’, who along with Peter had seen this coming, watching from their table as it happened almost in slow motion. There was absolutely nothing he could have done to stop it.

Cursing Sirius into oblivion didn’t even occur to Remus, despite the almost comical horror on his face. No. Remus was long past the cursing into oblivion stage. He moved right along to the ‘attack’ stage right about when Sirius came running out of the stacks, screaming. In the library. After half an hour of tapping and humming and sneezing and generally acting like a five year old on speed.

Remus vaguely recalled convincing himself not to try to rip Sirius’ throat out with his bare hands, and thinking that it was highly unlikely that he’d actually be able to do so. Sirius wasn’t terribly taller than he was, but he was at least twice his weight and in very good shape; in a fight, Remus didn’t stand a chance on a good day. Now, on the bloody night before the full moon? He would have to be insane to instigate a physical fight.

Then again, the word “lunatic” was so-called for a reason. And an incensed, slightly delirious Remus packed a surprising punch for someone so sickly. Sirius being half-mad from laughing and already lying on the floor in a pile of broken table certainly helped his cause when he lept at his friend, intent on throttling Sirius at the very least.

Sirius' laughter was silenced abruptly as Remus leapt on him, hands going for Sirius' throat. Sirius was too shocked to do or say anything, or really to react at all. He choked as Remus' hands closed around his throat, reaching up to grasp Remus' wrists, trying to pry them away from him. He's definitely going to have bruises, Christ.

Finally he manages to hold Remus' wrists away from his body, rolling over and pinning him in the wreckage with a significant amount of effort, panting.

"Moony, man, what the fuck?" he choked out in a strangled voice, his windpipe feeling like it was partially collapsed.

"What do you mean, what the fuck-" Remus started, half incredulous, half incensed, before suddenly someone from behind Sirius- invisible to Remus, with Sirius between him and the rest of the world- cast two quick spells, and both boys were lifted out of what could only be described as wreckage and onto their feet. And before that could so much as register for either boy, each had an ear in Madam Pince's grasp. Luckily for both of them, probably, whatever was going to come out of Remus' mouth was cut short; she'd already been halfway to the table, ready to possibly murder Sirius herself, when Remus attacked.

In fact, she looks to be holding on to Remus' ear much more gently than Sirius'; frankly, if it was up to her, she would probably have let him get away with it simply because she would have done the same thing if she wasn't a professional. As it was, though, she had to punish them both. Which meant a trip to McGonagall.

Yanking on the ears of two fifteen-year-old-boys, she dragged them towards the door, quite all right with leaving the library unattended in the effort to get these two out of it. And so that she could increase the volume of her shrill whisper-yelling, once outside. "I simply cannot believe the two of you, destroying library property is not funny, Mr. Black- that could have been a bookshelf-" Remus winced at the mental image. "-and violence, right on top of the table, absolutely no respect for the library- what came over you two?!"

Every other word was punctuated by her pulling on one ear or another, making both boys wince and follow her obediently- as though they'd be stupid enough not to follow an angry Madam Pince. And it was quite obvious that she would carry on yelling and pulling on their ears until she found Professor McGonagall. Who would undoubtedly pick up where the librarian left off.

Madam Pince did indeed have a hissy fit while explaining what had happened to McGonagall, who looked more and more shocked the farther the story went along. By the end, she was really just sputtering.

"Mister Black!" she snapped. "Really! Performing acrobatics in the middle of the library and destroying valuable school property--" She cut herself off, clearly not wanting to keep going. Really... she wasn't all that shocked. Mr. Lupin, on the other hand...

"And you, Mister Lupin! A Prefect! You are such a well-behaved boy, your friends' shenanigans so rarely draw you in--I am shocked that you would instigate violence in the middle of the library, of all places! Physical violence!"

This sort of scolding- or any sort of scolding, really- completely worked on Remus, who had already managed to look completely ashamed by Madam Pince's.... sputtering and screeching. That had been bad enough; but then she'd left, letting their now-reddened ears go and managing to storm out of McGonagall's office while somehow remaining dignified. And then... Professor McGonagall. That was much worse.

Remus rather liked her. Well, he liked most of his professors, but she was the Gryffindor Head of House, and even his friends had a healthy... er, well, they did respect her, in their way. She was a good head of house, and a good teacher, and frankly as far as Remus knew, a nice enough lady, and Remus liked her. After all, as they all well knew, Professor McGonagall was often the one to take him to the Shrieking Shack every month, to lock him in and then to check on him in the mornings to be certain he hadn't eaten off his own hand or... something equally unpleasant. Although Remus wasn't entirely certain there was much that was equally unpleasant as eating one's own hand...

Even so, that meant that a scolding from McGonagall, who was quite good at scoldings, Remus had noticed, was for Remus twice as bad as a normal scolding (which was bad enough for him to begin with). He’d already looked completely guilty; as soon as McGonagall looked at him, Remus turned from guilty to full-on ashamed. A good contrast, probably, to Sirius, who may or may not actually have had the shame gene. She said the word ‘Prefect,’ and Remus looked down at the ground, completely embarrassed. He even winced a little when she added “violence” in there. Yes, now that he’d had a few minutes of having his ear partially pulled off, Remus recalled that violence was bad and in the library was even worse- not to mention attacking Sirius. Who he maintained was probably on speed and possibly the most annoying person to ever discover such a thing, but that didn’t mean attacking him was all right. Or… even really sensible, considering he could hardly remain standing at the moment. But he couldn’t apologize to Sirius until McGonagall was done shouting at him.

“Sorry, Professor,” Remus mumbled, barely audible, staring at his feet. Which… would be much easier to do if he could focus his eyes on anything.

"You should be sorry, Remus." Sirius was frowning deeply, and Remus could only see the twinkle in his eye because he knew him so well. "Don't you know you're supposed to be setting an example for us miscreants?" He frowned at Remus, mimicking McGonagall's expression almost perfectly.

"If Jamesie and I are to follow your example, we should just start tackling each other in the library all the time! Shame, shame, Remus James Lupin. Shame on you."

McGonagall sighed. "Mr. Black--"

"Shame, Remus."

"MR. BLACK. Mr. Lupin." She sent them both the evil eye. "Detention, both of you. Remus, you will report to Madam Pince tomorrow night. Mr. Black, you will report to me every night this week!"

And then, ignoring Sirius' protests of unfair treatment, she promptly ejected both of them from her office, slamming the door behind them.

Not terribly amused by Sirius making fun of McGonagall, Remus didn't respond to any of his joking. He remained looking guiltily at the floor throughout most of it; at any other time, he would probably either smile or shoot Sirius a disapproving look, but honestly, he still felt bad enough about trying to choke his mate that Sirius got away with not a single glare.

Well, that, and Remus was starting to feel more than a little woozy. And he was certain he hadn't had more than two feet previously, when he'd been staring at them... but he didn't have time to wonder about that before they were thrown out of the office.

Wait. Did he just get detention on the first night of the full moon? Remus blinked, but then decided not to worry about it just then. He didn't feel particularly well, not that he was surprised by that at all. The moon must have risen. Well, no "must have"; Remus knew it had. And of course, he would see it, once back in the dormitory. All night. Because their room faced the east, where the moon rose. And even though his bed was as far as it could be from the window, that didn't stop him being able to see out it.

This was going to be one of those nights. He could tell. He wouldn't get a wink of sleep, even ill as he felt. He'd just stay in bed, fighting the urge to get up and... well, do something. He preferred not to dwell on what. He preferred to stay in bed and nurse a fever.

But to do that, he first had to get to the Gryffindor Tower. And to do that, he first had to apologize to Sirius. Who looked much less bothered by this detention idea than he did. Well, of course. He'd just gotten detention all week. His score had to have been above James'. Remus didn't understand it. But... well, to each his own. Maybe that would make Sirius more forgiving. Still, Remus spent a moment staring over at him, trying to make his eyes and mind focus properly. What to say to your mate when you had just tried to murder him in the middle of the library?

“Er,” he finally managed, mumbling a bit, “Sirius… I… sorry. I don’t know what… what came over me.” Of course, that was a downright lie, they both knew what had come over him. Bouts of violence and other absurdly un-Remus-like things were just as common from him around this time of the month as they were uncommon from him the rest of the month. But the sorry part, well, that was no lie.

Sirius glanced over, frowning. He reached up to rub his throat, but then he patted Remus on the shoulder, rather more gently than usual. "It's all right, Moony," he said quietly, still fidgeting a bit, although he was better now than he'd been earlier.

He looked a bit guilty himself. "Truth be told, I tried a bit of that muggle cola with some sort 'o fizzy candy in it, and it's made me into some kind of madman. Can't sit still." He shrugged, looking away and shifting his weight from foot to foot. "Shouldn't'a provoked you, though. I didn't do it on purpose, but all the same."

Looking back at Remus, Sirius could tell his friend didn't feel too good. "C'mon, you should get back to the Tower. I'm not carrying you if you pitch over." Not true. He obviously would. But he couldn't just say that. Remus' pride and all that, not to mention his own...
