Personality~
Severus was a very secretive person who kept to himself, making it very hard to get to know him much at all. He was very smart, especially when it came to potions, but saying he wasn't much of a socialite would be kind. He just didn't seem to know how to make friends or to carry on a healthy relationship with anyone in any manner at all.

He did like certain people, certainly, but that didn't mean anything particularly... well, good. He tended to obsess, and came on far too strong at times (*cough*Lily*cough*). And as for people he didn't like... well, that's another story altogether.

His standoffishness (which came off as haughtiness) and lack of social skills, not to mention the fact that he was almost always brooding about something or other, and quite moody in an unpredictable sort of way, made him a prime target for bullying (*cough*Black&Potter*cough*). Not that he cared. Stupid gits.

He liked to think that he was just a more mature, deeper person than his fellow students. Certainly, on some levels that was true. But his haughty attitude was undoubtedly a cover. The truth is that Severus was a very unsure young man, with very little feeling of self-worth, striving to make himself seem like something more than what he was. And that quest for self-worth seemed to be leading him down a path that wasn't exactly fluffy bunnies and sparkly rainbows.

History~
Severus was born to an interesting couple in a small, run-down brick row house at Spinner's End. His mother, who came from a well-known pureblood family, was the Prince's last child, and so the only hope to carry on the family name (at least sort of). Of course, it didn't work out that way. Eileen Prince ended up marrying a muggle man by the name of Tobias Snape, thus getting herself (and any children she might have) disinherited.

For reasons Severus could never understand, his mother chose his father over her pureblood status, marrying Tobias and beginning a rather unhappy little family life in Spinner's End.

Tobias supported the family the muggle way... since he was a muggle himself. Unfortunately, he wasn't very good at supporting them, and in fact rarely managed to keep a job for more than a couple of months before being sacked. This caused all kinds of marital problems, which were usually solved by Tobias' getting smashed and coming home to hit his wife and Severus, when Severus tried to protect Eileen, despite the fact that his mother was neglectful at best towards him.

In fact, after the first time Severus tried to protect his mother, Tobias' beatings began to focus almost exclusively on Severus. This went on, and in fact worsened when Severus received his Hogwarts letter. His father, tired of being the "lowly muggle" (marital problems, again), grew to hate Severus for his abilities as a wizard, abilities which Severus could not suppress. And so his beatings became worse and worse until by the time Severus was thirteen, he would do anything in his power not to go home over holidays.

At least, that's how it went until the summer after his third year, when his mother died in what is publicly considered an accident. Severus knew better; he knew very well that his father killed his mother in a fit of drunken rage. The police never discovered the truth of his mother's death. His father was never caught, never punished.

At least not until he died the next summer, last summer, supposedly of a heart attack.

Severus was home for this incident, but was never under any suspicion; it looked like a heart attack, as far as the Muggle authorities could tell. And since Tobias was a Muggle, his death was not investigated by any Wizarding authorities. Which is just as well, since... well, Severus was always good at potions.

Life went on as usual, and Severus still attended Hogwarts, still lived at Spinner's End, alone. After all, if he moved away, he wouldn't have lived near his one and only true friend, Lily Evans, anymore.

Overall Appearance~
Severus was on the taller side, but lanky, lacking in any significant muscle. He would never win in a fist-fight, as was demonstrated repeatedly by those idiots in Gryffindor really just Sirius. He was not usually very well-dressed, and didn't spend much time taking care of his appearance.

His hair was dark, and usually fell into his eyes. Typically it was on the longer side, and did have a tendency to look greasy. He was extremely pale, and no amount of time out in the sun would ever do anything to change that (well, he would burn, in theory, if he had ever attempted to go out in the sun).

Does blood status matter to them?~ Yes, except when it came to Lily (this was before the infamous 'mudblood' comment). He pretended to pure status as much as possible, because all his friends were doing it. And because he hated Muggles.

What they smell in a love potion~ Roses, leaves, and Lily's shampoo, or whatever it is that made her hair smell so nice.

Special~ Began to study Occlumency and Legilimency. Supremely gifted at potions, not that anyone bothered to notice. Has invented several curses and hexes in his free time, which is to say all of his time.
